San Jose State women’s soccer (4-5-5, 3-2-2 MW) defeated Utah State (6-5-5, 3-3-1 MW) 2-1 at the Spartan Soccer Complex on Thursday, Oct. 13.
Both goalkeepers were perfect in saves as each team was unable to score in the first half. The Spartans finished the half with only three shots on goal.
SJSU head coach Tina Estrada left during the game due to a family emergency. Still, the Spartans’ offense picked up the tempo and kept firing off shots against the Aggies.
SJSU women’s soccer was able to score the first goal of the match in the second half thanks to SJSU sophomore forward Bella Flocchini.
Utah State senior forward Jordan Foraker put an end to the lead late for the blue-and-gold with an equalizer goal in the last 10 minutes of the game.
In the 83rd minute, SJSU senior midfielder Sabrina Weinman broke through Utah State’s defense and found the back of the net to put the Spartans back on top.
“We’re tied 1-1 last 10 minutes of the game and Tatiana, she plays a great wall, I’m running around the defense and stick and touch to finish it,” Weinman said.
“Everybody came out ready to play and played hard.”
“Utah State pushing on more which gave us space to attack but really the girls created those chances from their teamwork and energy,” said SJSU associate head coach Collin Audley.
The Spartans were gifted chances thanks to the Aggies giving up 11 fouls while SJSU only gave up six.
SJSU women’s soccer all-time record against Utah State is now 5-8-3.
San Jose State women’s soccer will be back at home against Boise State (7-2-7, 3-0-4 MW) on Sunday, October 16 at 12 p.m.
