San Jose State softball fell to Nevada on Saturday in another slugfest between the two teams. The Spartans dropped the second game of the series, 14-13.
Runs, runs and more runs. That has been the theme since the series started.
The Spartans dug themselves into a huge hole early in the game and were down 7-0, after the first inning. Most teams would see this as an insurmountable lead to overcome however the Spartans didn’t and showed resilience.
SJSU started chipping away at the deficit in the next inning, scoring three runs. The Wolf Pack’s lead had shrunk to four runs after two innings.
The Spartans weren’t letting their feet off the gas pedal. They would go on to score an absurd eight runs in the third and fourth innings combined. The Spartans were the ones in the driver’s seat now.
Spartans’ right fielder Ashley Rico, went yard in the fifth inning to tack on another run. The Spartans led 12-7 and looked to be in command of the game.
The sixth inning was when things took a turn for the worse for SJSU.
The Spartans were able to add another run but pitching was where they started to struggle. SJSU’s pitching staff gave up a couple of doubles and a home run, as well as allowing six runs to score.
With the game knotted at 13, something had to give in the seventh inning.
With the Spartans batting first, they had an opportunity to go up ahead and put pressure on the Wolf Pack.
The inning looked promising as SJSU got two runners on. However, the Spartans failed to put any runs on the board.
Defensive miscues continued to haunt the Spartans in a crucial inning. A runner got on vía an error and advanced to second base. After a bunt, a sac fly was all that was needed for Nevada to win.
In a game that looked more like a football game in the final score, the Spartans weren’t able to survive the offensive onslaught.
SJSU will play the rubber match Sunday against the Wolf Pack at 12 p.m.
