San Jose State women’s water polo lost to Stanford, 15-5 in their final game of the regular season.

By the end of the first period, the Spartans were down 5-1 and they could not seem to claw their way back into it.

The Spartans’ deficit ballooned to 9-2 in the second period, leaving them with little room for error. The Spartans could not generate sufficient offense to keep up with a fast-paced Stanford team.

The Spartan’s defense was not holding up either. Spartans’ goalie Hannah Henry was outperformed by Stanford’s Maya Avital, saving four shots to Avital’s nine.

Riley Agerbeek scored two goals for the Spartans, the first Spartan goal in each half. Clarissa Wandinger, Maiken Pardon and Lauren Woolley tacked on a goal each to help the Spartans narrow the deficit.

Despite 24 shots on goal, SJSU only converted on five of those attempts. On the flip side, Stanford scored 15 goals on 26 attempts.

The Cardinal’s Ryann Neushul was the leading scorer of the match with four goals. The Spartans were outplayed on both ends of the pool and could not overcome a relentless Stanford team.

The Spartans finish their season 0-6 in conference play in what could have been their first conference win.

SJSU will gear up for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship toward the end of April where they can continue to compete.
