SJSU softball takes game one against Nevada in a high-scoring shootout

The offense was clicking for San Jose State softball as it snapped a three-game losing streak against the University of Nevada, 14-10.

The hero in this one was freshman first baseman Ashley Goard, who hit two home runs totalling five RBIs.

It all started for the Spartans in the first inning, as a five-run outburst was capped off with the first home run from Goard, one that resulted in three runs scored.

SJSU kept the foot on the gas pedal early and often, as a Jenessa Ullegue double in the second inning scored Allysa Graham. The Spartans needed all the offense they could get, as Nevada put up a massive four-run second inning to tie it at six heading into the third.

This set up more heroics from Goard, as she once again went yard, driving in two runs.

One concerning aspect of the game for the Spartans was some sloppy play in the field late. In the fifth inning, two Wolf Pack runs were allowed to score due to throwing errors. This allowed Nevada to cut the lead to two going into the sixth.

In that sixth inning, senior Jessica Giacoma sealed the deal for the Spartans with an RBI single that, with some help by a sloppy Nevada defense, resulted in two runs scored.

Spartan softball is back on the field at noon today for game two of the series with Nevada.
