Spartans take on the Gauchos in a Sunday matinee

San Jose State women’s soccer (0-2) will play its third match of the season against UC Santa Barbara (1-1-1) on Sunday.

The Spartans are off to a rough start this season, starting the year with back-to-back losses while being unable to put a tally on the scoreboard.

SJSU was outclassed in their opening match against Santa Clara University, as they finished the match with only three shots on goal.

The offense seemingly began to click during their most recent matchup against the University of San Francisco with the team finishing with six shots on goal.

While a point for Spartans women’s soccer remains to be seen, the tandem of freshman goalie’s Shayla Sugai and Autumn Monty have done their due diligence in keeping the opposition from scoring.

In two games, the pair has combined for 14 saves, as Sugai has taken on the bulk of those recoveries with 11 saves.

If SJSU hopes to steal a victory from the Gauchos, they will have to depend on their defense once again.

UC Santa Barbara is coming off a 1-0 overtime victory, defeating the Sacramento State University Hornets.

Freshman midfielder Sophia Vivar scored the game-winning shot for Sacramento State in the 97th minute of the match.

The Gauchos were persistent in their quest for a win against Hornets, as they put up 19 shots with seven of those being shots on goal.

Sacramento State didn’t have much luck against UCSB defense, either.

The Hornets were only able to muster up a single shot on goal that freshman goalie Evann Smith was able to secure.

SJSU has a chance to salvage their three-game homestand before going on a two-game road trip.

Catch the action at 12:00 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex and on the Mountain West Network.
