Women’s volleyball recap: Spartans secure first win of the season

By Dan Nguyen — Reporter

San Jose State women’s volleyball (1-0) took their first win against Santa Clara University (0-1), 3-1.

The Spartans played four sets against the Broncos with each set being tightly knit.

In the first set, both outside hitter senior Haylee Nelson and junior Amethyst Harper were the stand out for that game as both players made kills.

SJSU took the first set 25-19 against  SCU and it remained a close match in the second set.

As the second set took place, the Broncos made early kills due to the help of middle blocker freshman Anna Stucchi.

Stucchi and setter freshman Nive Tuileta shined for Santa Clara at the beginning of the second set.

The early scoring built momentum for SCU to keep pace with SJSU, however that didn’t last very long, as the Spartans managed to climb  to a 12-10 lead

Not before the Broncos managed to slowly claw their way back to a 23-23 tie.

With efficient teamwork, Nelson, middle blocker graduate Ryann Thomison, and outside hitter graduate student Latahevai Lousi wouldn’t allow SCU to take the win from SJSU, scoring consecutive shots with the Spartans finishing the second set with a 26-24 lead.

The Spartans and Broncos then began their third set.

SCU jumped out to a 7-3 lead, with built-up momentum from the second set, the Broncos managed to score consecutively with the help of senior setter Michelle Shaffer and outside hitter sophomore Sophia Tulino.

The Broncos took the third set 25-22 from the Spartans as both teams looked ahead to the fourth set.

The fourth and final set saw eight different lead changes.

SCU managed to take the lead on SJSU at 23-20 with the Spartans turning the game around by making kills and getting scores with sophomore setter Mia Schafer having the most assists for the blue and gold.

Thanks to the Broncos’ attack errors made during SCU’s final moments of the game, SJSU closed out the game with a 26-24 victory, marking their first win of the season.

SJSU looks to make it back-to-back wins, as they go up against the University of Oregon at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
