The stands were rowdy as the San Jose State women’s soccer team (5-6-0, MW 2-1-0 MW) battled the University of Wyoming Cowgirls (5-5-1, MW 1-2-0 MW) to a 1-0 victory at the Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, Calif.
Going into Friday’s game, tensions were running high as both Mountain State rivals wanted to set the tone early and often.
“We like to keep our grit while trying to stay composed at the same time,” senior defender Karlee Pottorff said.
From kickoff, both teams played physically on both sides of the ball, holding each other scoreless in the first half.
Neither team was able to get rolling on offense until San Jose State scored in the 70th minute to take the lead late in the game.
Sophomore midfielder Jordan Rowell was able to find that spark to score the go-ahead goal for the Spartans.
“We focus on getting to work and we’ve done a good job of finding that within us and coming together,” Rowell said.
The Spartans finished the game with five shots-on-goal and saved all three shots-on-goal coming from the Cowgirls.
SJSU head coach Lauren Hanson knows Wyoming all too well as she has game-planned against the tough playing style of the Cowgirls.
“This team is a very physical team so matching their physicality and getting the ball down and playing,” Hanson said.
The stats show the physicality of the game as SJSU finished with 14 fouls, one more than Wyoming’s 13 fouls.
The Spartans will next take on Colorado State Oct. 3rd at noon in San Jose.
