Tennis secures Mountain West title with win over SDSU

The San Jose State women’s tennis team has won the 2021 Mountain West Championship.

SJSU (15-1, MW 8-1) ended the season in style by defeating the San Diego State Aztecs (5-8, MW 3-6) 4-1 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The Spartans bounced back from their first loss of the season against University of Nevada, Las Vegas 4-2 on Friday.

Doubles

SJSU had a tough start to the day losing the doubles point. 

Spartans’ doubles partners Irena Muradyan and Tamara Culibrk lost to Aztecs Cecile Morin and Regina Pitts  6-2.

SJSU duo Rozalina Youseva and Raquel Villan Pereira lost to Abbie Mulbarger and Alexandria Pohrer 6-4.

The third doubles duel between Spartans Alba Pedrero Galindo and Alba Marco Mas remained unfinished against Aztecs Nnena Nadozie and Alicia Melosch.

Singles

Singles matches saved the day for SJSU again, winning four of the six games played to secure a 4-1 victory.

Spartan junior Alba Pedrero Galindo made up for her doubles loss by taking down San Diego State’s Nnena Nadozie 6-0, 6-3.

Freshman Irena Muradyan made a strong comeback defeating Aztecs’ Cecile Morin 6-2, 6-3.

The winning momentum was kept up by freshman Raquel Villan Pereira who defeated San Diego State’s Abbie Mulbarger in two sets 6-2, 6-1.

Serbia native freshman Jovana Babic defeated Aztecs’ Alexandria Pohrer 6-2, 6-1.  

Unfinished

Two singles matches remained unfinished.

Sophomore Rozalina Youseva’s match remained unfinished against Aztecs’ Regina Pitts 7-6, 3-1.

Fellow sophomore Lara Marco Mas also ended her match unfinished against SDSU’s Alicia Melosh 7-6, 0-2.

With this win, the team solidified its overall record at 15-1, a feat that’s the first of its kind for the University.

The Spartans began the season on Feb. 12 with a 4-1 win against UC Irvine and ended the season in a similar style winning 4-1 against the Aztecs.
