Friday night could have been a turnaround point for San Jose State women’s soccer, (0-3-1 MW).
After allowing 12 goals in their first three matches, the Spartans managed to earn a point against Nevada with a 1-1 draw at Mackay Stadium.
Granted, both teams are sitting in the cellar of the West Division but they played better than their records show.
The match went the full distance with the soccer ball bouncing on the field turf higher than Mt. Shasta. Both teams battled through the chilly elements and mostly played a clean soccer game.
The scoring did not start until the 71st minute with the Spartans striking first. Freshman midfielder Jaiden McClellan launched a strike from about the 30 yard line to earn her first collegiate goal.
The lead only lasted three minutes when Wolf Pack Maddie Marr scored off a corner kick in the 74th minute which sent the small crowd in Reno into a frenzy.
Both goalkeepers were solid between the pipes. Spartan junior transfer Zoe Aguirre got her third straight start and looked comfortable in net. The Eastern Kentucky transfer made three saves and kept the strong defensive effort intact.
UNR goalkeeper Kendal Stovall made four saves on five shots on goal. The match went through two overtime periods where it was more of a defensive battle between both teams until the final horn sounded.
There was a scary moment in the first half when Spartan sophomore forward Jennah Loggins suffered a right knee injury after going for a tackle against a Nevada midfielder. She was able to walk off the field but did not return to the match.
The Spartans road trip continues when they head to Boise, Idaho to take on the Boise State Broncos, (2-1-1 MW). kickoff will be on Sunday at noon.
