Spartans make history against Saint Mary’s

By Don Le Reporter

San Jose State  women’s tennis (7-0) continued its  best ever start to a season as it  got a narrow 4-3 victory over Saint Mary’s  (2-4) Saturday at the Spartan Tennis Complex.

This is the first time Spartan women’s tennis has started the season 7-0 and it is in no small part to the team’s impressive singles play.

Saturday’s victory came off a point when the Spartans were down 3-2.

After losing the doubles point for only the second time this season, the singles players had to climb out of a 0-1 match deficit.

It was looking dicey for the Spartans as junior Alba Galindo Pedrero lost her match against Saint Mary’s Mariia Kozyreva 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, putting SJSU down 2-0.

But as we’ve come to expect, the Spartan’s star freshman singles player Irena Muradyan was able to get her team another match point.

Although the Armenian tennis savant and her partner sophomore Rozaline Youseva lost their doubles match, she redeemed herself with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Saint Mary’s Daniella Mcintyre, putting SJSU down 2-1.

Sophomore Lara Marco Mas followed up with her own 7-5, 6-1 win against Saint Mary’s Gabriela Tevez, tying it up for SJSU at 2-2.

Freshman Raquel Villan Pereira lost her match against Saint Mary’s Jocelyn Massey 77-63,6-4, ending her two game win streak and putting SJSU precariously down at 3-2.

At this point it looked as if the first SJSU team to ever go 6-0 would be handed its  first loss of the season.

But if there is anything to learn about these tennis players this season, it is that they are tenacious and never give up.

Senior Savannah Sendar won her match against Saint Mary’s Aubane Ville 77-62,6-3, tying it up 3-3.

This put the match point onto the final singles match of the day and somehow, someway SJSU was once again able to come out on top.

Youseva defeated Saint Mary’s Jordan Harris 6-0, 6-4, 6-3, finalizing the close victory for SJSU at 4-3.

Muradyan added another win to her spectacular freshman season putting her singles record at a flawless 7-0.

After this close victory, the ladies can rest as they look to continue their win streak against the University of Wyoming on March 26 at 12 P.M.  at the  Spartan Tennis Complex.
