Men’s soccer preview: SJSU vs UTRGV

By Anthony Lucido — Reporter

Strong minds prevail, but only if they keep their cool.

San Jose State men’s soccer (1-1-1) plays its fourth game of the season home against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (3-0-1) on Saturday.

The Spartans have had a strong start at the beginning of the season, winning their first game against Dixie State 2-1.

However, they’ve since fallen off as their past two games have shown.

SJSU has the power and experience to defeat a lot of its opponents but gets held back by its ownself thanks to fouls.

The Spartans have racked up a whopping total of 30 fouls just in their first three games of the season with 17 of those fouls being in their previous game against Houston Baptist 1-1.

Several players have made three fouls each with Junior defender Eduardo Miranda making a total of six alone.

Aside from this particular issue, the matchup is fairly even with the edge going to SJSU.

Historically, the Spartans have done well by winning four out of the seven games they played against the Vaqueros and tying only once.

Hopefully the cool 57-degree weather on Saturday can keep some heads calm and focused.

SJSU men’s soccer plays its game against UTRGV at the Spartan Soccer Complex (SSC) on 7 P.M. Saturday.
