Silicon Valley was outsmarted Friday night.

San Jose State (2-7, 0-5 MW) lost to Fresno State (4-3, 2-3 MW) 79-64 at Save Mart Center in Fresno.

Dressed in yellow jerseys with blue silhouettes of San Jose State landmarks—including Tower Hall and the Smith and Carlos statue— and “Silicon Valley” on the front, the Spartans seeked to earn their first conference win of the season.

The lead swung back-and-forth in the first half as both teams shot above 50 percent from the field. The Spartans outshot the Bulldogs from beyond the arc 55 percent to Fresno State’s 42 percent.

SJSU went into the break with a three-point lead.

The Spartans extended their lead to as much as five points coming out of the halftime break.

Then came Fresno State. The Bulldogs went on a 27-7 scoring run to end the game and pull away with the victory.

Sophomore forward Orlando Robinson led Fresno State with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Senior guard Richard Washington led SJSU with 30 points, six rebounds and three assists. It was Washington’s second 30-point game of the season.

Although Washington posted a stellar statline, his teammates struggled as the second-leading scorer from the Spartans was senior forward Ralph Agee who finished with 13 points and four rebounds.

The Bulldogs outplayed the Spartans in several facets of the game: rebounding, bench scoring and points in the paint.

Fresno State’s bench outscored SJSU’s bench 32-18 while also outscoring the Spartans in the paint 40-26.

The Bulldogs also controlled the glass out rebounding the Spartans 47-24.

SJSU will look to get its first conference win Sunday against the same Fresno State Bulldogs at the Save Mart Center at 4 p.m.
