The Central Valley Blues continue.
Richard Washington scored 24 points as the Spartans (2-8, 0-6 MW) lost to Fresno State (5-3, 3-3 MW) on Sunday, in the second of the teams’ two game series.
Once again Washington carried the scoring load for SJSU with 12 of its 25 first-half points. The rest of the team was a combined 5-24 shooting as both teams struggled to score early in the game.
Washington is currently second in the Mountain West with 21.6 points per game. The senior was able to follow up Friday’s 30-point performance with another strong scoring effort.
Senior forward Ralph Agee was the only other Spartan who finished in double digits, including a couple of powerful dunks in an attempt to give the Spartans life.
The Spartans’ shooting woes from the second half of Friday’s game reared its head Sunday, as Washington and junior guard Jalen Dalcourt were the only players to make a three.
Bench scoring was overwhelmingly in favor of Fresno State. It got 55 points from their reserves versus just nine from the Spartans as sophomore guard Deon Stroud scored a career-high 22 points for the Bulldogs.
Six different Fresno State players made a three in the second half as Fresno State came out of halftime on a 30-14 run to extend its lead to 29 points.
The Spartans ended the game on a 16-3 run to bring their deficit down to the teens.
The Spartans will head back to Phoenix in preparation for their two-game series against Colorado State beginning Thursday, while Fresno State will head to Reno and face Nevada on Friday.
