Spartans ready to take on Cal

Women’s basketball season is back and in full effect. San Jose State women’s basketball will face Cal Wednesday in the first game of their season.

The Spartans have become a group with undeniable talent and a team that must be watched.

“Finally our games are solidified and we are excited to prepare outside of our conference,” said head coach Jamie Craighead.

Cal has a very notable athletic reputation, especially compared to SJSU but last season their team’s record was 12-19, the exact opposite of the Spartans 19-12 record. SJSU had more wins, but this doesn’t make for an automatic victory.

This group of Spartans have shown to play a breakneck style of basketball and have completely turned around their reputation. In one season the Spartans have managed to surprise everyone by becoming a team that dominates.

“We proved a lot of people wrong and we’ve just kept building,” said junior Ayzhiana Basallo.

The biggest strength that this team has is their ability to play together. Because of the dynamic of the women on this team they are able to come out with wins.

Aside from Basallo and forward Tyra Whitehead this team has demonstrated the ability to utilize their chemistry and create a very intimidating group to face.

“We have been working daily to be ready to compete for a Mountain West championship,” Craighead said.

On the Bears side, with the graduation of leading scorer Jaelyn Brown they look for their go-to on offense. Sophomore guard Jazlen Green is a candidate, she took and made the most 3-pointers last season and was second in points per game.

If the Spartans are able to play with the same intensity as last season it should make for a good game. As long as they are able remain consistent when it comes to their shooting and aggressive on defense a win is attainable.

They will tip off in Berkeley at 4 p.m.
