No San Jose State football fan will scoff at a 2-0 start to the season for the first time since 1987, however one cannot forget past gruesome seasons record wise.
It was just in 2017 and 2018 that SJSU had back-to-back 11 loss seasons, so what’s different about 2020?
Other than the fact that pretty much everything surrounding the Spartan football team has changed such as practice, training camp, and game locations, this season also denotes an all-Mountain West schedule that can most definitely benefit the SJSU this season.
Before last season the Spartans did not have a winning record against out-of-conference opponents since the 2012 season, when they went 6-1 against opponents outside of SJSU’s former Western Athletic Conference.
The Spartans have also had little success against in-conference opponents, going only 6-20 against the Mountain West since head coach Brent Brennan joined in 2017. But SJSU has been able to find some traction in 2020 defeating Air Force and New Mexico so far this season
There are still six games for the Spartans to play, and one cannot help but to be slightly pessimistic in regards to SJSU’s success this season, as history has not been kind to SJSU football over the years.
Regardless of whether or not one sees the glass half full or empty for the Spartans this season, a 2-0 start is a step in the right direction, and has already erased a large blemish in the San Jose State record books.
But the season is still young, and given the general consensus of past seasons for SJSU, there is also a possibility that a loss to San Diego State could snowball, and ultimately invalidate the impressive 2-0 start the Spartans have jumped off to.
