SJSU vs SDSU: A History

By Matthew Gonzalez — Reporter

San Jose State football (2-0) has lost to San Diego State (2-0) a whopping seven times in a row, a streak the Spartans will look to end on Friday night when they hit the field against a ground-and-pound Aztec team who have dominated their first two games of the 2020 season.

The last time the Spartans were able to take down SDSU was in 2012, when SJSU defeated the Aztecs 38-34, and ended the season 10-2, with a Military Bowl win over Bowling Green.

Along with Boise State, SDSU has been atop the upper echelons of the Mountain West, steamrolling the Spartans in years past.

This year however, we have seen a rejuvenated SJSU squad that has burst on the Mountain West scene, rattling off two consecutive wins and matching the Aztecs record of 2-0 going into the game Friday.

SDSU has won five of their seven straight wins against the Spartans by double digits. SJSU’s defense and offense however, have both played phenomenally this year, holding a run-heavy Air Force team to a minuscule six points, and defeating an unpredictable New Mexico squad by 17 points.

While the Aztecs have given the Spartans an inordinate amount of trouble, SJSU head coach Brent Brennan and company have no time to dwell on the past:

“I don’t really look at it that way [defeating San Diego State],” Brennan said. “I look at what a win can do for our team.”

A win for the Spartans would break another unwanted record, a common theme for Spartan football this 2020 season.

No matter what, Brennan will need to have his players ready to take on this daunting task, and believes that any game can be won no matter what the circumstances as long as they prepare properly, and the team believes they can win.
