SJSU swim championships cut short due to coronavirus

The San Jose State swim team competed in its final meet of the 2019-20 season in the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America where they had a 12th place finish out of 33 teams.

This yearly National Invitational Championship in Cleveland, Ohio was cut short due to the global threat of coronavirus. 

Normally a three-day meet, no spectators were allowed in attendance as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19. Only family and friends were permitted at Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. 

Opening day consisted of SJSU 200-yard freestyle relay placing third with seniors Gabby Heng, Katie McIntee, Antoinette Loya and sophomore Madelyn Sailors coming in at 1:31.69.

For the final 50-yard butterfly, Loya came in at 24.68 with a 12th-place finish and freshman Rebecca Petoe came in at 25.13 in 14th.

Sophomore Chloe Limargo swam the 50-yard breastroke, a 14th place position clocking in at 29.08.

Competing in the 50-yard freestyle, Heng and Sailors drove in for a seventh and eighth place finish at 23.18 and 23.22, respectively.. An impressive four-millisecond difference. 

Heng, Limargo, Loya and senior Lani Auva’a closed out the first night with the 400-yard medley relay clocking in 3:44.54 for 21st place. 

The meet ended with the 200-yard medley relay with Loya, Auva’a, Petoe and Sailors swimming as the anchor who helped drive them into 17th place at 1:41.37.   

SJSU standings totaled 724.6 points and earned them a 12th place finish. 

The Spartans 2019-2020 season went unfinished with a dual meet record of 5-2-1.
