Spartans’ losing slump over behind Potter’s career-high

The Spartans found themselves in yet another nail-biter on Saturday, but came out on top this time over the Rams of Colorado State 69-64 thus snapping their previous five-game losing streak.

Sophomore forward Raziya Potter was the player of the game for San Jose State (16-11, 10-6 MW) as she dropped a career-high 20 points and added 5 rebounds. Not to mention she came off the bench in this contest.

“I noticed I wasn’t in my head,” Potter said. “Today I decided to come out with energy.”

After a slump of five consecutive losses that included three losses by 4 or less points, the Spartans clutched out a narrow victory down the stretch.

“We were competing in such close games and just not closing them out,” SJSU head coach Jamie Craighead said. “I think every team goes through ups and downs throughout a season and we were so hot in January and in February we hit some bumps in the road.”

The third quarter was the deciding factor in the game, as it was a tale of two shooting percentages. The Spartans shot a whopping 58 percent in the period, while the Rams shot an abysmal 25 percent.

SJSU also knocked down 5 triples in the third quarter.

The Spartans have now taken the victory in both matchups with the Rams this season. Interestingly, both games were decided by 5 points (58-53 on Jan. 11).

The Spartans’ next game will be on Monday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. versus the Utah State Aggies at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
