Spartans finish 12th at Barbra Kalbus Invitational

San Jose state women’s water polo dropped two of its four games at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational hosted by UC Irvine and Corona del Mar High School. The invitational took place in Irvine and Newport Beach.

SJSU (5-10, 0-1 MPSF) played against No. 5 Arizona State University (11-4) and fell to Sun Devils 8-6 on day one.

The Spartans’ sophomore utility player Olga Descalzi Portell put one up for the team and was assisted by junior driver Lili Urvari to start the game. 

Less than a minute later, junior 2-meter defender Tyanna Supreme drove the ball in and scored a goal for the Spartans.

ASU sophomore attacker Borbala Kekesi scored two goals for her team during the first quarter.

It was freshman attacker Lior Ben David who closed out the quarter with a goal for the Spartans leading 3-2. 

Urvari hit the back of the net to give SJSU a boost in the second quarter.

The Spartans were unable to score in the third and ASU came out on top with a two-goal lead, 6-4. 

Both Descalzi Portell and Urvari scored powerplay goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Sun Devils outscored SJSU and ended the game 8-6. 

Descalzi took an impressive 11 shots at the ASU net and Urvari took eight for the game’s entirety.

On day two, SJSU battled against No.15 UC Davis (8-11) in a second overtime win.

During the first quarter, Supreme scored two goals for the Spartans and tied the game up 2-2.

Urvari, Supreme and Descalzi Portell  put SJSU ahead by three goals to end the second quarter 5-2. 

In the second half, Descalzi Portell and sophomore utility player Clarissa Wandinger scored a goal a piece, but it was not enough as UCD caught up and ended the fourth quarter tied 7-7.

With both teams tussling points back and forth, Supreme was on a roll and scored two more goals. Urvari and sophomore 2-meter defender Isabella Schmidt also successfully hit the back of the Aggies cage.

Sophomore utility player Emma Hank put up the last and final goal for the Spartans, keeping it a close contest winning 12-11. 

In the afternoon, No.8 UC San Diego (11-5), SJSU fell 8-5. 

Opening up the first quarter, UCSD scored two goals and SJSU’s Descalzi Portell was the Spartans’ only scorer.

Coming into the second and third quarters of the game, Descalzi Portell, Urvari and Supreme all hit the back of the Tritons cage and the team trailed by two goals ending the quarter 6-4. 

Freshman utility player Bailey Stubblefield put up the last goal for the Spartans in the fourth quarter and UCSD ended it 8-5. 

This was Stubblefield’s first goal of her SJSU athletic career. 

For the last and final game on day three, SJSU took on No. 16 Loyola Marymount (8-6) and trailed 13-10 in a second overtime. 

Descalzi Portell opened up the quarter with two goals a piece and Urvari with one goal.

SJSU senior driver Caroline Kerwin scored on a powerplay and Descalzi Portell ended the second with another goal for the team tying it 5-5.

For the second half, the Spartans’ Supreme scored assisted by senior 2-meter defender Jacqui Maisey. 

Maisey put one up for the team, Descalzi Portell scored twice and Urvari ended the fourth quarter tying the game 10-10. 

The Spartans remained scoreless in double overtime and the Lions won 13-10. 

SJSU ended the tournament with a 1-3 record to place 12th out of 16 teams. 

The Spartans will return to the SRAC to host USC on Sunday, March 1 for a game at noon.
