San Jose State women’s water polo hosted the Lou Tully Memorial and played back-to-back games against Sonoma State and No. 2 Stanford Saturday.
Against the Sonoma State Seawolves (0-2) the Spartans (1-2) dominated and came out of the pool with a 21-7 win.
SJSU scored 20 goals for the first time since beating Occidental 20-3 in the 2017 season.
Sophomore 2-meter Tyanna Supreme, sophomore utility Olga Desclazi Portell and junior utility Riley Agerbeek had four goals apiece. The junior scored her second best match against Sonoma State.
Deja vu all over again. Against Cal, Desclazi Portell opened up scoring for the Spartans, and would do the same against the Seawolves. A power play goal by the sophomore and a goal by 2-meter defender Jacqui Maisey would give SJSU an early 2-0 lead.
The Spartans continued to put the ball in the net, boasting a 11-3 halftime advantage and a 14-5 lead after three periods of play.
The win also marked the first time since the same win against Occidental that 10 Spartans scored a goal in a single match.
In the latter of the two games, SJSU would fall short to The Cardinal (2-0) in a 13-5 loss.
The Spartans kept it close. They were only outscored two goals in the first half, but Stanford pulled away with a 4-1 third period and outscored SJSU 7-1 in the second half.
“We’re just pumped to be in our own pool and we’re pumped to have our first home win of the season,” Supreme said. “Even our game against Stanford, we’re still pretty proud because I think this is one of the closest games we’ve had against Stanford and this is exactly where we’re going, i in the right path so everyone is pretty excited.”
The Spartans have their next bout of games in the Cal Cup in Berkley. The first of four games starts at 8 a.m.
