San Jose State women’s soccer (3-4-1, 1-1-0 WAC) holds off Air Force Academy (6-2-1, 1-1-0 WAC) to complete a 2-1 comeback victory Sunday morning at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans were able to secure the win through an impressive performance by sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Romero, withstanding a ferocious 15 shots put on by the Falcons.
The Spartans were down in the 13th minute when Air Force forward Lexi Romero scored an early goal, but momentum quickly shifted in the second half.
Freshman midfielder Sabrina Weinman put San Jose State on the scoring sheet in the 67th minute despite the Falcons holding a 57-43 percent possession advantage.
The two halves were remarkably different from one another as Romero withstood shot after shot, cementing the victory for the Spartans.
Despite a lackluster start to the match, the defending Mountain West champions were able to capitalize on Air Force’s midfield struggles.
Freshman forward Madison Toomer contributed to both Spartan goals by finding a streaking Carlie James in the 81st minute.
San Jose State only managed a meager five shots on net the entire game, with only one shot on goal in the first half.
Romero did not concede a single goal in the second half, despite the Falcons controlling much of the game.
She kept the score 1-0 in the second half, stopping a crucial penalty kick after the Spartans committed a controversial foul in the box.
The 2-1 comeback victory was monumental considering SJSU’s early season defensive struggles.
The Spartans will travel back to the Spartan Soccer Complex to take on Boise State Thursday night at 7 p.m., seeking to turn around their season after dropping four straight games prior to this match.
