Hit-by-pitch gives Spartans 11th win in a row

San Jose State softball (21-9, 1-0 MW) powered through Fresno State (15-10, 0-4 MW) in the top of seventh for its first conference victory and extended its win streak to 11 games.

Sophomore infielder Cassidy Clark scored two of the three runs for the Spartans that included the game-winning run.

With bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Clark was hit by a pitch to drive in freshman utility Carley Morfey across the plate, 3-2.

The Bulldogs couldn’t stop the SJSU’s drive early in the game when it scored two runs in the first inning.

Clark drove in junior outfielder Makayla Englestad on an RBI single and put the Spartans on the board first.

Later in the inning, junior infielder Madison Aurin extended the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Fresno State cut the deficit in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Rachel Minogue. An RBI single from Kelcey Carrasco tied the game 2-2 in th fifth.

Sophomore pitcher Caroline Bowman pitched 5.1 innings. She gave up two runs on five hits and struck out three hitters.

Freshman pitcher Jenessa Ullegue relieved Bowman for 1.2 innings and earned her ninth win of the season.

The Spartans will continue the series Saturday at 3 p.m. in Fresno.
