San Jose State beach volleyball (6-6) split Friday’s doubleheader with a tough 3-2 loss to Saint Mary’s and solid victory over Sacramento State 4-1 in Folsom, California.
The Spartans’ first match against Saint Mary’s (8-3) came down to the wire, but resulted in the Gaels’ direction.
Sophomores Thaliana Grajeda and Kaitlynn Zdroik pressed their match to three sets and took home the point 15-12. The pair of senior Julia Golbeck and freshman Sarah Smevog clinch the other point for the Spartans by taking both sets 21-16 and 23-21.
However, despite these two Spartans winning sets, the team fell in its other matches.
SJSU bounced back in the second match of the day and defeated Sacramento State (1-4) 4-1.
Zdroik and Grajeda came back strong and pushed their match to another three sets. They won won in their third set 15-12.
Golbeck and Smevog also won their second point of the doubleheader in two sets.
Junior Caitlin Bettenay and freshman Tabea Schwarz also won in straight sets 21-17 and 21-15. SJSU’s fourth point of the day came from seniors Giulia Gávio and Luiza Andrade in two sets, 21-17 and 21-16.
The Spartans will stay in Folsom and comepete against the University of San Francisco and the Hornets once again Saturday. The matches are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
