San Jose State men’s golf team competed in the two-day Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif. and placed sixth out of 12 teams.
The Spartans played on the par 72 at the North Ranch Country Club course and posted a 296 in the second round, boosting its overall final score of 878.
Senior Kevin Velo’s final round of three under 69 helped SJSU stay ahead of Oregon State, and nearly put the team one shot away from fifth place No. 22 Tenessee.
Velo was SJSU’s top finisher with a score of 213 that put him into fourth place with a five-way tie.
Junior Sean Yu and senior Ben Campbell tied for 20th place at 221, while sophomore Bryce Wortman finished in 51st.
USC’s senior Justin Suh claimed the individual title at 204, and assisted the team to a first-place finish with a final score of 860.
The Spartans are set to play on course at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore. starting on March 10.
