San Jose State women’s basketball (4-21, 3-11 MW) took care of business at the Event Center by defeating Air Force 73-60 for its second-straight win.
Defense got it done for the Spartans in this game as they caused the Falcons to turn the ball over 26 times — 18 of which came in the first half.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, SJSU began to apply the pressure on the Air Force (8-18, 4-11 MW) and didn’t look back.
It dominated the second quarter by outscoring AFA 20-5. The Spartans got their lead all the way up to 25 points.
Sophomore forward Mikaylah Wilson was a key player for SJSU all afternoon, with 16 points and 9 rebounds while shooting an extremely efficient 7-8 from the field.
“I circle every time they drive to the basket … and my defender goes to them so they just pass it to me,” she said.
Sophomore point-guard Danae Marquez was another key piece to the Spartans win as she dropped home 12 points while also dishing out 8 assists. She made sure to keep herself and her teammates involved.
“Communicating, making sure of eye contact, and high-fiving,” she said. “Just the little things to stay locked, especially when it gets more intense down the stretch.”
The bench was also a huge impact in this game, as the SJSU’s second unit outscored Air Force 22-0.
“I thought our bench was really big … so that was obviously an atributing factor to the win as well,” said head coach Jamie Craighead.
The Spartans will look to continue their winning streak at the University of New Mexico on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
