Third-year Chelsea Andrada tied San Jose State’s school record on beam with the score of 9.900 — a season and career-high. She also finished in second in vault with the score of 9.775.
Freshman Carli Orcutt dominated in vault and finished first with a career-high score of 9.800.
The Spartans started the night with their first event on bars, where they fell behind the Hornets by 0.275. Stephanie Relova led the Spartans with a 9.750 as Orcutt and Tia Gin finished their routines with a score of 9.650.
However, the usual leaders on bar, Taylor Chan and Kaprece Nadonza, both ended the night with a score of 9.150.
SJSU received a quick wake-up call and came back strong on vault. San Jose State clinched first through third place on the scoreboard, with a two-way tie for third.
Orcutt steered the team in the right direction with a career-best score of 9.800, with Andrada following at 9.775. Chan and Josalyn Ray each tied with 9.7500 and Trisha Raquel added another 9.400 to the scoreboard.
After vault was floor, where the Spartans usually shine bright and take control over the meet. Chan finished her routine with a 9.825 and set the bar for her teammates.
Ray followed with a 9.700 routine and Antonia Marquez received a career-best of 9.675. Relova finished with a 9.575 as Orcutt finished with an even 9.500.
After all four rotations and the hefty battle fought for first place, the Spartans lost by one-tenth of a point making victory so close, but yet so far.
SJSU will look for redemption against Sacramento State and New Hampshire on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Event Center.
