Despite San Jose captain Joe Pavelski scored his 700th career point in an early-game against the New Jersey Devils, the Sharks closed out their roadtrip with a 3-2 loss.

“This game felt exactly  like a couple of other ones we lost so far,” Pavelski said in a postgame interview with NBC Sports California. “It’s right there for us, we expect to win these things and that’s very frustrating right now.”

The first period remained scoreless even with San Jose’s 16 shots on goal and New Jersey’s nine.

Pavelski broke the silence 3:51 into the second period. Brent Burns and Evander Kane assisted Little Joe in earning his 700th career point in his 12 years in the NHL.

On a 5-3 powerplay, Devils Kyle Palmieri evened the score to 1-1 at 7:06 in the second.

Timo Meier gave San Jose its lead back in the final five minutes of the period with a shot past New Jersey goaltender Keith Kinkade.

The Devils retaliated Meier’s goal 37 seconds into the third period again with Palmieri who scored on Martin Jones for the second time of the day game.

“You’re always trying to improve and get better, it’s always disappointing when you don’t win,” Dell said to NBC Sports California. “We’ll take some positives from it and look at the video and get better”

New Jersey’s Jean-Sebastien Dea sealed the win for the Devils three minutes into the third with assists from Mirco Mueller and Taylor Hall.

“We have to play harder, a lot better, smarter, individually there are guys that haven’t played well yet this season,” Logan Couture said to NBC Sports California. “Thankfully, we’re only six games in where this is happening, gonna have a couple days here to regroup and get ready for Thursday.”

The Sharks are returning home to SAP Center after a five-game road campaign on Thursday to take on the Buffalo Sabres at 7:30 p.m.
