Couture, Sharks survive in Sin City to even series 1-1

By Taylor Lupetti

In a nail-biting, double-overtime game, San Jose Sharks’ Logan Couture scored the game-winning goal to take Game 2 from the Vegas Golden Knights, 4-3.

The teams went back and forth in the first period until Vegas’ William Karlsson broke the silence at 17:59 of the game. The goal sent the Knights into the second period with a 1-0 lead.

Karlsson came back less than 30 seconds into the second period and scored to give the Knights two unanswered goals.

San Jose quickly responded when defenseman Brent Burns cut the deficit to one with a goal of his own 1:30 after Karlsson.

Sharks’ center Couture tied the game at two in 11:08 of the second period with an assist from Tomas Hertl.

Burns struck again 12 minutes after his original goal with San Jose’s third unanswered goal, and gave the Sharks a  3-2 lead after the second.

The third period remained scoreless until Nate Schmidt got one past San Jose goaltender Martin Jones. The defenseman tied the game 3-3 for the Sharks’ first overtime of the postseason.

Neither team scored in the first 20-minute overtime period, but didn’t fail to exhaust both teams as they headed into the fifth full period of the game.

Couture ended the game at 85:13 with a power-play goal and handed the Knights their first postseason loss.

The Sharks outscored the Knights by a landslide with 47 shots on goal against Marc-Andre Fleury compared to Vegas’ 29 shots.

The tied series is now heading to San Jose where the Sharks will have home-ice advantage. Game 3 is set for Monday at 7 p.m.
