Women’s water polo dropped its final match of the season 13-3 against No. 5 Arizona State at the MPSF Championship.
The Spartans, who finished the regular season 9-19 and 0-5 in the MPSF, have struggled against their conference opponents all year and the Sun Devils weren’t about to make their final game easy.
The Sun Devils’ defense was fired up after not letting the Spartans put up any points in the first quarter.
ASU’s senior goalkeeper Mia Rycraw saved both of SJSU’s attempts to score, one of which was followed by a Sun Devil goal.
SJSU’s defense only let ASU get two points in the first quarter.
Senior Klaudia Paradi was able to score right away in the second period, but it was shortly followed by another Sun Devil goal making the score 3-1.
ASU took a 6-1 lead going into halftime after putting up three more points.
The Spartans came into the second half ready to play and net another one at the start of the third period.
Junior Guara Garcia Delgado scored both of the Spartan goals in the second half.
The Sun Devils weren’t ready to slow down just yet as they responded with back–to-back goals to take a seven-point lead.
Taking advantage of every possession they had, the Sun Devils would go on to net two more goals before the end of third period. ASU led 11-2 going into the final period of the match.
Although the Spartans were looking for their only conference win of the season, they were no match for the Sun Devil defense.
SJSU would go on to score one more goal in the fourth quarter while the Sun Devils netted two.
Senior Tayler Peters had a total of 10 saves throughout the match.
This was the last match for seniors Vanessa Elgohaey, Jennifer Liu, Jordan Milich-Misikini and Paradi. Senior goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson had her last match on Friday against Stanford.
