Baseball in Fresno, look to stretch win streak

By Allison Covey (@allisoncovey ):

Fresh off a win on Tuesday, San Jose State’s baseball team is on the road to take on rival Fresno State this weekend.

The last time SJSU (12-19, 4-10 MW) took on Fresno (20-12, 7-8 MW) was March 17-18 where SJSU took two of three against FSU.

As those two wins make up half of the four conference wins for the Spartans this year, they will try to keep momentum in their favor as they are coming off two-straight wins.

A large part of being able to win two consecutive is thanks to first baseman Shane Timmons. The senior cashed in four RBIs last earlier in the week against Santa Clara on five hits, all singles.

Senior outfielder Brett Bautista still leads SJSU with his overall play. He is ranked No. 5 in the Mountain West with a .381 batting average and 37 hits.

Although Bautista tops the squad with 37 hits, senior outfielder Chris Williams is close behind with 36 and Timmons in third with 35 hits.

Fresno has won seven of their last 10 games and junior outfielder Zach Ashford is on 34-game on-base streak that needs to be watched for.

Ashford’s batting average of .372 is ranked one spot below SJSU’s Bautista in batting average in the Mountain West.

Fresno State’s pitching ranks third in the conference in pitching with a 4.63 ERA while SJSU ranks No. 5 with 5.86 ERA.

First pitch is on Friday and Saturday is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., while Sunday is slated for 1:05 p.m.
