San Jose State baseball dropped its third straight conference game in an 11-4 loss to Nevada.
The Spartans (6-7, 0-3 MW) had nine hits but only scored four runs against the Wolf Pack (6-6, 3-1 MW) on the road.
It was a 1-1 game going into the bottom of the fourth inning until the Pack blew the game wide open by scoring five runs, backed by a three-run bomb by junior Weston Hatten.
SJSU was held to one run until the eighth inning. Trying to get back into the game, senior Shane Timmons hit a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to seven runs.
“Shane gave us a big swing at the end of the game to build a little momentum to try and get back in it, but the game was a little far out of hand at that point,” said head coach Brad Sanfilippo to SJSU Athletics.
Senior pitcher Josh Goldberg (1-0) made the start for the Spartans and pitched into the fourth inning until he was taken out after the Wolf Pack took the 6-1 lead.
Three Spartan errors led to two unearned runs and the Wolf Pack cashed in on the free bases.
“We have got to minimize big innings,” Sanfilippo said. “If we can minimize those then we have an opportunity to win games.”
SJSU hopes to get its first conference win today at 1 p.m. game, the second game of the three-game series.
