It was a season to forget for the San Jose State women’s basketball team that finished its season 4-28 and going 2-18 in conference play.
A rough 0-17 record on the road made it the first time SJSU women’s basketball went winless on the road since the 2010-11 season going 0-14.
The team relied heavily on sophomore guard Maya Anderson, who averaged 13.9 points per game and was the only player who averaged double-digit points. She also played and started in all 32 games.
Anderson took on a bigger role from last season, where she only started in 17 games and averaged 5.4 points.
Her 444 points scored this season led the team and placed her seventh in Mountain West scoring.
It was SJSU head coach Jonas Chatterton’s first season with the team. He inherited a 10-win team with six returning players.
Of those six returners, only two averaged double-digit minutes in the 2024-25 season, senior guard Amira Brown and junior guard Rylei Waugh.
Waugh played in nine games before she suffered a season-ending injury against Cal State Monterey Bay.
In her limited time with the team, her presence was felt, averaging 9.9 points per game.
Brown appeared in 26 games and was one of the more efficient scorers on the team, shooting 35% from the field.
She logged just four-minutes in the Feb. 18 win against Utah State, and did not finish the rest of the season.
“Now without Amira, we’ve got to find some scoring from somewhere else,” Chatterton said after a 49-41 loss to Nevada.
Junior guard Allie Cummins would grow into that second scorer role, becoming a reliable shooter for the team. She shot 32% from beyond the arc.
Chatterton expressed his gratitude for senior guard Katarina Anderson, who stepped up when needed.
“Kat is continuing to get better and better, she just has been in and out so much but she’s running our team and helping us a ton right now,” Chatterton said after a 77-61 loss against Air Force.
Her 13 points against Boise State in the Mountain West Tournament helped SJSU stay competitive and keep the Broncos on their toes early on.
SJSU would lose to Boise State 68-51, ending their season. But Chatterton highlighted the effort of the team throughout the season.
“I thought as we went through the season, continued to battle, I couldn’t be more proud of these guys everyday showing up,” Chatterton said. “The way we’ve practiced, the way we’ve approached things, these kids deserve a ton of credit.”
