San Jose State women’s tennis (4-1, 0-0 MW) dropped its first match of the season with a 7-0 loss to California State University, Northridge (4-1, 0-0 Big West) on Friday at the Matador Tennis Complex in Northridge, Calif.
The Spartans battled through several tight sets despite the final score.
CSUN secured the doubles point with wins on the lower courts to take early control of the match.
Spartans’ freshman pair Tara Mihaljevic and Camila Celis narrowly fell 7-5 in a competitive doubles contest.
As well as sophomore duo Soledad Fayos Capilla and Cristina Mateos Losada dropped a close 6-4 decision.
In singles play, SJSU sophomore Emma Fantousis delivered the longest match of the day, pushing her opponent to a third set before falling 5-7, 6-3, 10-5.
Mihaljevic forced a second set tiebreaker but came up short 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
Mateos Losada also battled into a tiebreaker before dropping a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) match.
SJSU junior Duru Durgun also fell 6-3, 6-4 in her singles match.
Fayos Capilla lost 6-3, 6-2, and Celis closed out the lineup with a 6-1, 7-5 loss.
Despite the sweep, the Spartans showed resilience in multiple close sets throughout the afternoon.
The Spartans will continue its road trip against Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Fullerton Tennis Complex in Fullerton, Calif.
