Under the setting sun at the Icardo Center, San Jose State was clinical against Bakersfield, winning 2-0 in a thrilling away fixture.
SJSU extend their streak to 3-0 for the season, the first time since 2001.
This game also marked head coach Simon Tobin’s return to his alma mater, coaching the roadrunners from 1987-2013 before joining the Spartans.
In the 17th minute of the match, junior defender Ruben Flores-Thomas beat his man and played a beautiful ball into the box for sophomore striker Arnold Matshazi to poach it and give the Spartans the lead.
Matshazi continues the hot form he’s had since his SJSU debut against Cal Poly, three games and three goals for the Englishman.
“I’ve been really impressed with his energy, [and] his attitude,” assistant coach Jesus Sanchez said, “Every single game he looks a little bit fitter and a little bit sharper.”
However, Flores-Thomas’s night wouldn’t end there as he darted in the opposition box to score SJSU’s second of the night in the 24th minute. The Spartans registered a team assist for the right back.
WAC keeper of the week Edgar Guerra also made his presence known in the match, making three important saves and putting his body on the line with high claims, showing why he is rated so highly in the nation.
“Hes been outstanding inside his box, his presence, his communication,” coach Sanchez said, “He’s playing with a lot of confidence.”
Bakersfield turned up the pressure in the second half and showed fight, but were still unable to capitalize on any chance they created.
The Runners had a total of 12 shots on target, but only three found their way to Edgar Guerra. The Spartans’ also had 12 shots, but found more success with six being on target.
San Jose State looks to continue their streak against San Francisco State Thursday Sept. 4, 7 p.m at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
