San Jose State women’s tennis (6-1) beat Cal State Northridge (2-5, 0-2 Big West) 4-2 for its second consecutive win Saturday.

SJSU freshmen Emma Fantousis and Soledad Fayos Capilla set the tone for the meet as they not only won their doubles match over CSUN senior Yulia Zhytelna and junior Sofia Dermenjyan, but they both won their individual singles matches 2-0 over sophomore Elena Goodman and freshman Sydney Wilson respectively. It was the first time Fantousis and Fayos Capilla played together.

“I think I was just really aggressive on the match. I was really going for it,” Fantousis said. “I started playing good from the first point first game, I was really enjoying playing it.”

In the two matches the Spartans lost, they lost 2-0 to the Matadors in each one. Sophomore Cheuk Ying Shek lost to Zhytelna and senior Carla Urchoeguia lost to junior Angela Ho.

“I thought today was a great college tennis match,” SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka said. “It was tightly contested. There were a lot of close pro sets in doubles, and there were obviously a lot of close sets in singles today.”

SJSU won two of the three doubles matches, with the remaining match unfinished.

Sophomore Duru Durgun won her singles match, beating CSUN senior Victoria Santibañez Luna but fell short in her doubles match with SJSU senior Olaya Bances Iglesias.

Fayos Capilla elaborated on how the Spartans have done this season.

“I think the key is to be positive, to be a team,” Fayos Capilla said. “I think we enjoy battling, and I think we have to keep doing the same and practicing good and for the next match.”

SJSU will look to keep its winning ways going into its next meet on the road against Santa Clara. Scheduled start time is 11 a.m. Friday.
