SJSU baseball (4-1) defeated Utah Valley (2-4) 5-2 at home on Friday. This win marks four wins in a row for the Spartans.

The Spartans’ defense was excellent throughout the entire game. They would only give up two home runs in the first and seventh inning.

Junior pitcher Jesse Gutierrez had a great performance as he had six strikeouts. Despite giving up a home run early on, he kept his cool and played lights out.

“You give up a home run and you’re rattled you’re not going far,” Gutierrez said. “Thanks to my teammates. They helped me stay composed.”

While the Wolverines would score a home run in the first inning, sophomore JC Osorio-Agard responded with a home run in the second inning which would swing the momentum in the Spartan’s favor.

“It felt great,” Osoria-Agard said. “Seeing your guys cheer you on is awesome. There is no better feeling.”

The rest of the Spartans offense played solid as well, most notably junior catcher Jake Maroney lead the team with two RBIs

The Spartans play Utah Valley again on Saturday at 2:05 P.M. at home. They hope they can continue their momentum throughout the series and come away with a sweep.

“If we continue to attack and play defense the way that we’re playing, I think that we can be in any game,” said head coach Brad Sanfilippo.
