The San Jose State softball team had an outstanding performance on the second day of the Silicon Valley Classic.
The first inning was quiet, with neither team able to get runners on base.
But things didn’t stay quiet for long, as the Spartans scored four runs in the second inning, capitalizing on a Cal Poly error and RBIs from Infielder Reina Zermeno and Catcher Aneesa Almaguer.
SJSU head coach Tammy Lohmann reflected on the team’s performance and what went into today’s result.
“The girls competed this week.” Lohmann said. “We worked on the little things, and we’re seeing the results.”
The Spartan’s defense came out strong, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning when Cal Poly got baserunners on first and second with one out.
A mound meeting sparked a change of momentum for the Spartans.
This inning was saved by a beautiful diving catch on a foul ball to left field by outfielder Haley Reeve, followed by a ground out that left Cal Poly runners stranded on second and third.
SJSU pitcher Mia Reynolds delivered a strong performance Saturday, allowing three hits and striking out four batters.
“My performance had a lot to do with trust,” Reynolds said. “Trusting my team, knowing they have my back, means a lot.”
SJSU continued its dominance in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs off of RBIs.
Cal Poly Slo failed to respond, costing them the game.
