San Jose State baseball (2-1) closed its season-opening series Sunday with a 12-4 win against Louisiana (1-2).
In the first match-up of the series, the Spartans suffered a 7-2 loss but bounced back in game two, winning 8-3 and tying the series.
“I’m really excited to leave Lafayette with the series win after losing Friday night,” SJSU head coach Brad Sanfilippo said in a video posted to the SJSU Athletics website. “Happy how we bounced back and played Saturday and Sunday. I think that it says a lot about our guys.”
Offensively the Spartans looked unstoppable compared to the Ragin’ Cajuns.
Right fielder Alex Fernandes led the offense as he went 3-4 having recorded four RBIs and two runs, also hitting two doubles in the game and walking once.
Fernandes ended the three-game series 7-9 with six runs and four RBIs.
The Spartans had multiple home runs in the game. In the second inning, third basemen JC Osorio-Agard hit a two-run home run which was the first of his career. In the ninth inning, Rocco Caballero hit his first home run of the season which was a solo home run.
SJSU pitcher Nolan George pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing one run and having four strikeouts.
SJSU will face Utah Valley in a four-game series which will begin at 3:05 p.m. Thursday at Excite ballpark in San Jose, California.
