San Jose State men’s golf finished 10th out of 13 teams in the 45th edition of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in a three-day tournament hosted by Pepperdine.
This is the first tournament of spring, the Spartans haven’t competed since Oct. 26 at the Ka‘anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational.
Overall, the team finished with a score of 861 (+9) led by senior Carl Corpus, who shot a 211 (-2), good enough to tie for 17th place. Corpus finished with a total of 12 birdies and an eagle over the span of three rounds.
On the first day, Corpus shot 68 (-3) and sophomore Xuan Luo shot 70 (-1) both under par.
“We left a couple out there that we’d like to get back,” said head coach John Kennady, “its a 54-hole tournament and we’ll get after it tomorrow and the next day.”
Momentum carried onto the second day for Corpus as he shot a 69 (-2) to stay in a tie for eighth place heading into the final day. Spartan Junior Zubair Firdaus followed in Corpus’ footsteps when he shot a 69 (-2) as well.
Collectively, SJSU had its worst outing on the last day with a score of 291. Firdaus shot a final round of 70 (-1) to finish in a tie for 23rd. Corpus cooled off, finishing his tournament day shooting a 74 (+3).
Up next, SJSU men’s golf will compete at the Amer Ari Invitational in Kamuela, HI on Feb. 8-10.
