San Jose State mens basketball (8-14, 1-8 MW) struggles in a 90-60 blow-out against Nevada (17-5, 4-4 MW) marking five straight losses.
The 30-point deficit is the largest defeat the Spartans have endured all season.
“We didn’t fight back,” SJSU head coach Tim Miles said after the game. “When they kind of bullied us and ‘big boyed’ us, we didn’t fight back and we’ve got to get a fighting spirit about us.”
Coming into the game, attention was on Spartan senior forward Tibet Gorener who was one 3-pointer away from tying the SJSU record for career 3-pointers with alumni Ryan Welage.
After starting the game 0-5 from three, Gorener finally tied the record in the second half with his 161st career 3-pointer.
Despite the historic feat, the Wolf Pack controlled the game from start to finish. SJSU led only 19 seconds for the entirety of the game.
A lack of discipline on defense was the biggest factor for the away team and resulted in the Spartans giving up 33 free throws.
Nevada redshirt sophomore Nick Davidson dominated his way to a game leading 22 points which marks a career high. The 6-foot-9 forward was efficient shooting the ball going 3-5 from three.
At 15:58 in the second half, Nevada acquired a 43-point lead, marking the largest of the game.
SJSU has had troubles on defense all season, but the usual offensive attack from SJSU was not present Friday night.
One bright spot for the Spartans was junior guard Alvaro Cardenas who, after struggling early, was able to score a team leading 13 points.
Cardenas has played well for SJSU all season and must continue to do so in order for the team to turn things around.
