Under the beautiful skies of Lahaina, Hawaii, the SJSU men’s golf team finished tied for fourth at the Ka’anapali Classic Oct. 28. The Spartans shot -36, 816 in their final tournament of fall play and were led by the play two top finishes from Ivan Barahona and Caleb Shetler.

This tournament broke the new all-time low record which they set just two weeks ago at the Alister Mackenzie. With this finish, it’s the third time SJSU has finished in the top five of a tournament this season — a positive sentiment moving into the spring season.

“These guys put together one hell of a fall season,” said SJSU head coach John Kennaday.

Shetler finished in fourth for his best finish of the year and shot the second best of any player on par 4s shooting a 9-under.

The team shot 15-under par on par 4s, the third best out of the field of 20. A large part of that goes back to Shetler’s play on Friday.

SJSU had a great start Thursday shooting a 15-under par, 269, setting them up in a positive direction the following days.

Barahona was the biggest contributor Thursday with a 7-under par round with seven birdies. The 64 is the lowest score by a Spartan during the fall season. In his first semester with SJSU, Barahona has already registered the best round and a second place finish at the Husky Invitational.

Kris Stiles also had his best finish of the season tying for 14th shooting a 66 on Saturday.

“We’ve played great. We really have,” Kennaday said.

It’ll be 93 days until SJSU takes the green again when they take on the North Ranch Country Club at the Southwestern Intercollegiate. SJSU finished last in the tournament last year and surely look to improve with four starters returning and a fall season under their belt.
