SJSU women’s basketball showed resiliency in its sixth-straight loss to New Mexico in a 65-54 loss at home.
The Spartans (6-14, 1-7 MW) kept the score within eight points for a majority of the game but the Lobos’ (16-6, 7-2 MW) firepower was just too much to contain, having four players in double figures.
It’s worth noting that the Spartans’ leading scorer, freshman Jyah Lovett, missed her second straight game and it is one of the reasons they couldn’t get shots in the paint this game.
San Jose native and junior Aniyah Augmon led the way for the Lobos in the first quarter, finishing with 10 of their 18 points as the Spartans trailed 18-12.
Sophomore guard Sabrina Ma gave the Spartans some much needed momentum in the second quarter. Ma went 3-4 from beyond the arc to bring the score to within four to end the first half trailing 32-28.
The Lobos went on a 8-0 run out of the gates to start the second half and coach April Phillips called a quick timeout to give her team a break.
“We came out and we just simply weren’t focused,” said Phillips “There wasn’t a thing we did in the first half that allowed us to be in a space that we were in.”
Second half battle:
After finishing with one point in the first half, junior forward Marisa Davis Jones battled hard to keep the Spartans within eight points at the end of the third quarter trailing 50-42.
Davis-Jones wound up one point shy of a double-double, ending the day with nine points and 10 rebounds. However, the Lobos defense shutdown Ma who didn’t get a single point for the rest of the game.
SJSU played physical defense the first three quarters but let the game slip away in the fourth as New Mexico saw its largest lead of 17 with 40 seconds left to go in the game.
SJSU women’s basketball will continue its home stand against Air Force on Saturday at 1 p.m.
