Matt’s Monday Mailbag: How can SJSU MBB increase student attendance?

Hello and welcome to Matt’s Monday Mailbag™ your go-to destination for all pressing SJSU football and men’s basketball matters.

Enough chit-chatting. Let’s get into it.

Ricky Delgado @RickyDe70535587 “How’s it going Matt, hope all is well. Do you have any ideas on how we could get more people, students in particular, to the event center? I understand the basketball team has only had one year of success, but like you pointed out last week, they only live 200 yards from the EC?”

Hear me out.

There’s this guy in the Bay Area named Rick Santoro who makes 49ers-themed socks. One pair features Joe Montana on one and Dwight Clark on the other. The catch is that a button on the sock plays audio from “The Catch.”

Make an Omari Moore version with former SJSU play-by-play broadcaster Justin Allegri on the call and you could see fresh faces.

Ricky Delgado @RickyDe70535587 “I think if this team is going to reach its potential, MJ is gonna have to be our guy, with Tibet/Trey as the secondary options. Al [Alvaro Cardenas] is a stud and can score the rock whenever so we know he’s always gonna be reliable, but MJ is gonna have to be our Omari this year.”

I have to agree.

Last week Amey scored a season-high 29 points to lift SJSU over New Orleans, but this week the Spartans fell to Montana after he scored 15 points. It’s daunting, but he might have to average 20-plus points until Trey Anderson returns from his knee injury.

But SJSU’s first priority should be playing better defense. By allowing 86 points to Montana, SJSU conceded at least 75 points for the sixth time – one more than last year. Not sure if it’s a correlation but SJSU is 1-5 in those contests.

Ricky Delgado @RickyDe70535587 “Football wise, I think we kind of shot ourselves in the foot again schedule wise. Out of conference is tough again, and now we dropped a New Mexico team with a new HC for Oregon state. How many wins would you consider to be a successful season next year? I’d like at least 7 or 8.”

At least seven wins and I think that’s tangible. That gives breathing room to lose to Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford and two conference opponents. At this point, SJSU’s goal should just be to make bowl games. Through that you get a substantial check for the program and enough respect from donors and the fan base to remain engaged.

庞安迪 @AndrewPang247 “Now that you have a blue check i must ask: you PAY for twitter now?”

My dad went to middle school with the guy who made millions from inventing the Pet Rock.

There are worse things to spend money on.
