SJSU women’s basketball defeated Loyola Marymount University (1-3) 61-53, as the Spartans showed sparks of great three-point shooting on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans (3-2) were led by freshman guard Jyah Lovett who scored 17 points and had three steals to compliment her amazing day. Lovett scored three of the team’s combined season-high, 10 three-pointers.

SJSU had three players record double digits as junior forward Amhyia Moreland put up a near double-double performance as she recorded 14 points and eight rebounds and freshman guard Sydni Summers scored 12 points off the bench for the Spartans scoring all of her points on four three-pointers made.

The Spartans won the match despite not having two of their key senior playmakers in forward Marissa Davis-Jones and guard Jasmine Singleton.

SJSU committed a season-low 14 team fouls, but the match got chippy in the second half. LMU senior forward Cynthia Ezeja picked up a technical foul after screaming at the referees in the fourth quarter after junior forward Amhyia Moreland hit her across the face with her hand attempting to grab the rebound.

Freshman Sydni Summers hit the clutch three-pointer with 39 seconds left in the game to help the Spartans extend their lead by five points and win the game. Summers looks to help to contribute off the Spartan bench as the season progresses.

“Syndi played 18 minutes, 4-9 from the three-point line and that’s the future of San Jose State’s women’s basketball. We’re going to be a much better team forward down the road once we get everyone back,” head coach April Phillips said.

SJSU women’s basketball will look to keep its momentum forward as it takes on the California Bears on Thursday, Nov. 24 at noon at the Haas Pavilion.
