The No. 12 SJSU women’s soccer team fell 3-0 on the road at No. 5 Fresno State on Thursday night.
The Spartans made several comeback attempts, but were unable to avoid a 3-0 loss. SJSU falls to 3-10-6 on the Mountain West season, while Fresno State moves to 5-8-6 overall.
“Tough season for us,” said SJSU head coach Tina Estrada. “Not the way that we wanted to have this season go.”
The Spartans lost 2-1 in two separate matches last week, against Colorado College on Thursday and Air Force on Sunday.
SJSU graduate student midfielder Sabrina Weinman played the full 90 minutes to lead the San José State women’s soccer team. Weinman appeared in her 79th career match for SJSU which is tied for the ninth-most appearances in program history.
SJSU junior defender Kayla Fortenberry, sophomore goalkeeper Bente Pernot and senior defender Phoebe Rapoza also played the full 90 minutes for the Spartans.
The Spartans pressed until the final minute, but failed to come up with an equalizer. The Bulldogs outshot the Spartans in the second half 12 to 1 and 18-2 for the game.
“With that being said, I’m really proud and thankful for the five seniors that put their heart and soul into this program.” Estrada said.
On Sunday, the SJSU women’s soccer team marked their senior day as they faced off against Air Force. As they bid farewell to this season, the Spartans also said goodbye to some key players, including Sabrina Weinman, Jennah Loggins, Sarah Santos, Phoebe Rapoza, and Kiana Miyazato.
The Spartans clinched the Mountain West Conference championship title last year, but have relinquished hopes of repeating that feat this year.
Thursday’s game was the Spartan’s final match of the 2023 season.
