Junior Brooke Bryant goes up for a spike that is a point for the Spartans | Nick Orozco – The Spear
Despite having its highest offensive game with a total of 57 kills since Sept. 30, SJSU women’s volleyball lost 3-1 to New Mexico (15-6, MW 7-3) for its fifth consecutive loss.
Three Spartans (11-11, MW 2-7) led the way with over 10 kills. Senior Letizia Cammillucci and junior Brooke Bryant both finished with 13 and freshman Nayeli Ti’a collected 18.
“It was helpful to have someone else scoring for the team,” said Cammillucci. “We played with different lineups so we had a lot of different options to score.”
While on defense, junior Alessia Buffagni had a career high game of 27 digs.
Their efforts were still not enough to overpower the Lobos.
The first set saw SJSU take a commanding lead as it started off with a 5-0 run. Eventually even having an eight point lead, 11-3. New Mexico eventually answered back with an eight point run to tie it at 15.
The Lobos would win the first set 25-23.
“We came out of the gate really strong, which we’ve been struggling to do,” said head coach Todd Kress. “Then we couldn’t finish.”
Coming back for the second set, the Spartans started the set off by being down 3-0, but eventually winning the set, 26-24.
Despite being up as much as five points in the third set 13-8, the Lobos once again made a strong comeback to strip the set away to win, 26-24.
SJSU was dominated in the fourth set being blocked a total of six times, five errors and allowing New Mexico to go on an eight point run. New Mexico won the final set 25-20 and the overall match 3-1.
“We gotta figure it out to win,” said Buffagni following the tough loss to New Mexico.
