SJSU women’s volleyball (11-6, MW 2-2) only allowed Fresno State (8-7, MW 2-2) to take one set in dominating fashion, 25-12. The Spartans won the following two sets to put down the Bulldogs and won, 3-1.

Head coach Todd Kress said the troubling second set that was “not looking like we knew what we were doing.” The Spartans recollected themselves in between sets to take over the final two.

SJSU came back to win the set 27-25 being down as much as four points in the first set. Senior Jiana Lawson capped off the win after getting two back-to-back service aces.

Fifth-year Yazmin Pitpit, who has been out due to an ankle injury, suited up for the first time this season.

“It took me a second to be able to trust it again,” said Pitpit. “It’s still a work in progress. So I’m gonna get better and I’m excited for season.”

The fifth-year contributed two kills in this match.

Leading into the second set after SJSU took the first, Fresno put a pause to its momentum and dominated to win 25-12.

“We didn’t look like we knew what we were doing,” said Kress. “We were out of the system, borderline out of control at times on the court.”

The Spartans came back to win the third set after taking an early three-point lead 5-2. Eventually winning the set by the same point gap, 25-22.

“It was hard to get out of that hole we were stuck in,” said junior Letizia Cammillucci. “We showed character and we work so hard for these moments [winning the third set].”

Cammillucci led the team alongside freshman Nayeli Ti’a who both had 14 kills on the day.

Capping off the final set, SJSU won the final set in its own dominating fashion with a lead of nine points to win 25-16 and the match 3-1.

“Winning that third set was some quality things down the stretch,” said Kress. “Then pretty much we were in control the entire way in the fourth set.”

SJSU women’s volleyball will hit the road once again to take on the University of Wyoming on Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
