SJSU track and field showcased an impressive display of hard running and record-breaking performances this past weekend as they competed in the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Sophomore jumper Emilia Sjostrand led the way the record filled weekend for the Spartans taking first in the women’s long jump with a mark of 6.37 meters, followed by with a 6.42 meter jump to set a new school record which was previously set by her.
The first place finishes continued as sophomore thrower Fabio Hessling captured first place in the men’s hammer throw with a 67.65 meter heave, marking the third best throw in program history.
Sophomore hurdler Osayi Omorodion took second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.92 seconds.
SJSU truly shined on day three continuing its run with multiple impressive podium finishes putting the cherry on top of an already successful event.
Freshman sprinter Jeremiah Walker had a huge final day claiming first in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 45.74 seconds marking the programs third best time in history. Walker took first in the men’s 200-meter dash as well, setting the third best time in program history with a 20.61 second mark.
Fellow freshman sprinter Demaris Waters joined in on the fun as he secured first place in the men’s 110-meter hurdles clocking a time of 13.51 seconds to set a new conference record.
Overall each squad secured a top five finish overall as the women’s team placed fifth, while the men’s team finished in third.
SJSU track and field have one more date with destiny in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Those who qualify will travel to Sacramento for the preliminary rounds next week in order to move on to the main stage in Austin, Texas on June 8.
