SJSU women’s water polo (12-20 overall, 0-6 MPSF) finishes seventh in the MPSF Championship, maintaining its original seed.

The Spartans played two games this weekend at the SRAC Pool. In the first round on Friday, the team fell to No. 2 Stanford 5-16. In its second and final round, the team struggled to win in overtime against Arizona State and lost 9-10.

SJSU vs. Stanford

The team’s offensive prowess showed up late in the match against Stanford . Three of the five goals scored that afternoon were in the fourth period. Redshirt freshman Kielle Leggo scored two goals out of five attempts.

On the defensive end, the Spartans had ten steals in total. Four of those steals came from the fourth period.

Senior Bailey Stubblefield, sophomore Renee Fleming, and freshman and all-MPSF newcomer Sinia Plotz had two steals apiece.

But even with the late aggression, the Spartans were unable to overcome their 11-point deficit.

SJSU vs. Arizona State

SJSU’s second-round match was decided by OT.

The team kept Arizona at bay with strong defense. Of the 14 steals amassed during the game, five of them were from sophomore Lucy Miszeweski. Goalkeeper and graduate Hannah Henry racked up 11 saves and a 52.4 save percentage.

Plotz had three goals and shared the wealth with three additional assists. But at the end of OT, graduate Clarissa Wandinger could not get the ball to the back of the net after an Arizona turnover.

SJSU fought hard throughout the match but failed to finish strong in overtime, putting them in seventh place at the MPSF Championship.

SJSU women’s water polo hosted the 27th MPSF Championship but won’t make an appearance on its final day of matches. Although the team has struggled with conference matchups (0-6), they continuously fought hard against nationally-ranked teams such as Stanford and USC. They close the season with a 12-20 overall record.
