San Jose State men’s basketball head coach Dave Wojcik didn’t waste any time filling Cody Schwartz’s roster spot as the program announced today it has signed former DePaul forward Oumar Barry.
The 6 foot 10, Barry was in San Jose last Saturday at the Spartan’s annual spring football game and spent time with Wojcik exploring the athletics facility at South Campus.
According to 247sports.com, Barry was the 13th-ranked player in Virginia from the class of 2015.
After receiving minimal playing time in his freshman season as a Blue Demon, the Virginia native transferred to Iowa Western Community College where he averaged 4.4 ppg and 4.4 rpg along with 62 percent shooting from the floor last season as a sophomore.
Although Barry’s stats aren’t eye-catching, he has the size and length to be an asset to the Spartans’ rim protection efforts alongside Mountain West All-First Team forward Brandon Clarke.
A Big East All-Academic Team Honoree, Barry will join SJSU’s uprising basketball team in the 2017-18 season and will be eligible to play because he transferred from a junior college and not a Division 1, 2 or 3 program.
SJSU finished the 2016-17 season on a five-game losing streak including a first-round exit from the Mountain West Tournament and an overall record of 14-16.
